CERAMED
Project - Workplan
Starting with the choice of ceramics to be dealt with, the work plan
adopts a vertical scheme which follows the five categories (Attic
black and red, Terra sigillata, Nabataean, Majolica, Iznik) from their
original creation to their contemporary re-creation with the use of
the ancient manufacturing techniques (raw materials and processes).
In addition, where required by present day health regulations, the
work plan involves the development of acceptable alternatives (essentially
lead-free or lead-safe glazes) without prejudice to the aesthetic
result.
WORK PACKAGES
WP0. Coordination
| Objective |
Management of the project, day to day flow of work, proper
and timely distribution of information to all partners, support
to partners in legal and administrative matters, collection
and distribution of internal reports, clustering with international
and other EU projects
|
WP1. Identification
| Objective |
This includes both the archaeological-historical
and the physicochemical/ archaeometric research. Basically the
harmonisation of the methodology both for the archaeological-historical
and analytical research, the analytical identification of materials
used for the production of archaeological ceramics of interest
i.e. clays, slips, pigments, glazes, surveys near production
centres, identification of local sources. |
WP2. Recovery
| Objective |
This workpackage uses existing
knowledge or the materials of WP1 in order to recover and validate
the ancient manufacturing techniques of interest. It is divided
into two parts Laboratory Reproduction (WP2.1) and full-scale
Prototype Reproduction (WP 2.2). |
WP3. Improvement
| Objective |
Based on the results and experience
of WP 2.2 (task 2.3) the improvement package will deal with
environmental and health aspects and the increase of production
yield. To this effect process control criteria for production
and quality criteria for the final product will be developed.
A further objective is the establishment of pilot experimental
production workshops by partners (4 and 5) based on the experience
and know how of such a workshop that is operated by partner
(6). These ceramic workshops will serve for the training of
craftsmen in museum quality reproductions.
|
WP4. Valorisation-Dissemination-Marketing
| Objective |
The goal of the project is to
bring the results of the research to the market by sensitising
the public to the importance of technologically authentic reproductions
of archaeological value objects. To this effect the results
of the project will be publicised in the media through interviews
with archaeologists, materials scientists and craftsmen and,
where possible, by ethnoarchaeological documentaries.
A subsidiary goal is to encourage young craftsmen to experiment
with technologically authentic ancient manufacturing techniques
by making available to them the necessary know how. The revival
or transfer of ancient ceramic manufacturing techniques has
led in the past to commercially successful new ventures. |
Throughout the project the partner's attention will be focused
on real life reproduction and market issues rather than open ended
questions which often characterise purely archaeometric studies.
